I have actually thought about many of Pollan’s points. How
many have I heard some say “I am not eating carbs until Formal” “I cannot eat
that, it isn’t whole wheat” “No more beer, too many carbs”. “Carbophobia, the most recent
in the centurylong series of food fads to wash over the American table, seems
to have finally crested, though not before sweeping away entire bakeries and
pasta companies in its path,” (Pollan 1) it only takes one article in Comso for
a wave of people to go on an extreme diet. People will listen to anything they
hear. I feel like this American diet views are a joke.
People
will listen if one of their friends texts them and tell them that if they eat a
lot of bananas they will lose weight or have a six-pack. I find it so funny
that people have this mind set. There are some many ways to find out legitimate
diets that will not only make you look better, but make you feel better. If
someone knows where to look for one of these diets, they will be much more
successful. “Food marketing in particular thrives on dietary instability and so
tends to heighten it,” (Pollan 4), the problem is, companies jump on these
kinds of fads. When the country hopped onto the carb free lifestyle, companies
would make sure that their items would have low carbs, and they would make it
very apparent on their packaging.
Personally,
I do not worry too much about low carb or trends like that. I think it is
important to have a balance diet, and I know when I need more protein and more
carbs. So I think that overall my diet depends on what I have been doing, if I have
been working out a lot, I need a lot of protein and if not, I just have a
normal balanced diet.
